How to Move Past Creative Blocks

Creative blocks, we all experience them and sometimes it can be difficult to reignite inspiration in our lives and our work. Today, I am sharing my top 5 tips for how to move past creative blocks.

  1. GO FOR A WALK

Something as simple as going for a walk can give you a serious reset. It helps to clear your head and gives you a change of pace. Changing your surroundings can help ignite a spark of creativity. I remember going for a walk not too long ago and seeing a book laying outside on someones lawn - the title of the book instantly sparked an idea for a concept project in my mind.

  2. TAKE A BREAK FROM SOCIAL MEDIA

Let’s be serious, consuming social media is draining and overwhelming. Taking a break will allow you to tap into your own creative mind without the influence of outside sources. It's hard to remember sometimes that social media is a highlight reel of everyones best and constantly consuming everyones best is detrimental to not only your creative process but your mental health. Take a step back and allow yourself some time to focus on life outside of social media, rather than consuming and feeling like you always need to show up the way others do on these platforms.

  3. WORK ON A PASSION PROJECT

This is probably my favourite way to move past a creative block. Working on something where you have complete and total creative freedom allows you to exercise new techniques, work through the creative process at your own pace and not worry about whether or not the outcome is perfect for someone else.

  4. WRITE IT DOWN

It can be extremely helpful to just sit down, open up a blank page and write down whatever ideas come to mind. You’d be surprised what ideas you have stored away that you might not be paying attention to or forcing yourself to think about consciously on the daily.

  5. EXPLORE OTHER CREATIVE OUTLETS

Creative minds tend to be multifaceted and have passions for many creative outlets outside of their main focus. Sometimes its good to venture out and play with other creative practices in order to reignite creativity in your main practice. For me, I find a lot of inspiration for my brand design from interior design.
